Tamiya 35357 1/35 Scale German Assault Pioneer Team & Goliath Set
Tamiya's 1/35 Scale German Assault Pioneer Team & Goliath Set features figures representing German sapper units (Pioniere) during World War II. These units were assigned to various divisions and were equipped with machine guns and other support weapons, as well as specialized training. In addition to typical sapper and engineering tasks, they were also used as assault units (Sturmpioniere) to attack fortified objects and resistance points. The set also includes a model of the Goliath, a German light self-propelled landmine. The Goliath was produced between 1942-1944, and around 7,700 units were made. It could carry up to 100 kg of explosives and was controlled by a cable pulled behind it. The Goliath was based on a captured French prototype developed by Adolphe Kegresse, and Borgward plants further improved it. Two versions were made: one powered by two electric motors (Sd.Kfz.302) and the other by an internal combustion engine (Sd.Kfz.303). The Goliath was used by German troops during various battles, including the siege of Sevastopol, the battles at Anzio, and the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. However, the Goliath had its drawbacks, such as unreliable engines, wired steering that was easily damaged, and relatively high production costs for a single-use weapon.
